FAQ: My dog has knots in its fur, the fur is matted. What can I do?

Depending on the type of coat, small knots and tangles can often still be removed gently.

However, in cases of extensive or very severe matting, we strongly recommend not trying to remove the matted hair yourself with scissors or other sharp tools.

The dog’s skin may be very close to or directly underneath the matted coat, making it easy to accidentally cause an injury.

We first carefully examine the coat and assess the severity of the matting. We then decide which treatment is the most appropriate and comfortable option for the dog.

In these situations, the dog’s well-being is always our top priority. Rather than spending hours pulling and brushing at heavily tangled hair and causing unnecessary stress or pain, we remove severe matting as gently and professionally as possible.

In the video below, we show how a severely matted dog coat is carefully removed by clipping.

My dog’s fur is matted. Can that be dangerous?

A matted coat is not just a cosmetic problem for a dog.

Severe matting can pull on the skin, restrict the dog’s freedom of movement and cause considerable discomfort.

Depending on the size and severity of the matted areas, it can also become very painful for the dog.

Skin irritation can also develop underneath heavily matted areas and may not be immediately visible from the outside.

In addition, these areas can provide an environment where parasites may go unnoticed and potentially become a problem.

Does my dog’s matted fur need to be shaved?

No. Whether clipping is necessary depends on how severely the coat is matted and how close the matting is to the skin.

Mild matting can sometimes still be gently loosened and removed.

In cases of severe matting, however, clipping the coat shorter may be a much gentler and more comfortable solution for the dog.

After the treatment, we will be happy to advise you on how to properly care for your dog’s coat at home and how to prevent new knots and matting from developing.

How can I remove knots from my dog’s coat myself?

Individual knots can be removed as follows:

First, try to gently loosen the knot with your fingers by carefully pulling the tangled hair apart and gradually “opening” the knot.

Then brush through it carefully. Hold the knot close to the skin with one hand to prevent the brushing from pulling on your dog’s skin.

Start at the outer end of the knot and gently work your way towards the skin, little by little.

Next, use the tip of a comb to carefully separate and comb through the individual strands of hair.

If the knot still cannot be removed, repeat the first step and gently loosen it again with your fingers.

You can also use a detangling spray specifically designed for dogs. You can purchase one directly from us as well.

If you are unsure how to do it, we will be happy to show you in person how to safely remove knots from your dog’s coat.

Always work gently and carefully to avoid irritating or injuring your dog’s skin.
